Part DIY, part organization, but today’s post is mostly just a real life solution for a small everyday annoyance. We, like many of you I’m sure, LOVE spices. My mom drilled into us that one of the greatest sins against food is under seasoning. Cut to our spice cabinet in the condo and it was always a jumbled mess. Somehow it was too shallow for a lazy susan, too short for a spice step, and yet we were still spending every dinner time digging through the hoard. Not efficient, not effective. I was determined to create a reliable system we could keep up and that’s when I found these organizers.
You’ll Need
durable containers (look outside of the kitchen aisle! I found these under “desk organizers”)
paint pen, vinyl letters, or sticker labels
Organize your spices before creating your labels to see what organization system makes sense for you. Once you have that nailed down, create your labels and slap on the organizers.
I didn’t have the patience to look for vinyl letters in the right size, so I used my Cricut Joy to make ours. The smart vinyl made it ridiculously quick & easy and I had all the containers labeled in under 15 minutes from creation to application.
I will say I had to order 4 different batches of these containers because they were inconsistently scratched or warped, but they have been worth it. I love how the cutout handle makes it easier to pull out and they feel sturdy enough that I don’t have to worry about the bottom or sides giving out. These ones in particular fit 2 standard spice jars across and 5 jars deep. I debated decanting all our spices into matching jars, but realistically keeping them in their original containers helps me find the ones I’m looking for a little quicker.
How to Organize Your Spices
I grouped our spices by the type of cooking we’d use them for. This way, we just pull out the entire container and have all the spices we need ready to go. Once we’re done, they go back into the container then the whole container goes back into the cupboard. It’s amazing how organizing a small, ritualistic part of your life can change your energy. It feels weird gushing about this non-DIY, but I cannot stress how much time this saves us. I now look forward to experimenting with spices more.
