We’re slowly moving through our renovations at the #TheHaileyHouse and I’ve been looking for some finishing pieces. It seems like everyone on Instagram has this vase and I had been trying to resist buying it since we have a cabinet full of vases from the last vase makeover DIY… but spoiler alert, I caved. Something about the soft taupe and texture contrasted with the strong sculptural handles made it irresistible. Then when I actually got it home it blended completely in with our neutral decor and white walls 🤦🏻♀️. So it obviously needed a little DIY makeover to make it stand out on a shelf, right?
You’ll Need
raffia or seagrass (I love the colors from Super Moss!)
cotton cord
clothespin
vase in need of a makeover
- Thread a bunch of raffia halfway through your loops or around whatever you want to wrap and fold in half. Secure with a clothespin.
- Take your cord and make a knot right above the clothespin.
- Continue making knots down the bundle until you reach your preferred length and tie off. I went with a basic Chinese staircase knot, aka the friendship bracelet knot, because I liked the added texture, but any kind of knot will work!
- Fluff out the raffia and you’re done!
This DIY would also be perfect for giving a vase you already own a little makeover too! Try braiding the raffia and making a “belt” for a vase or make raffia pom poms and create a pattern. I love how easy raffia is to work with and the amount of texture it adds to everything! I can’t wait to play with it more. What projects would you use raffia for?
