Sometimes you look and look and look for that perfect, finishing piece and then you remember, wait… I’m a DIY blogger. I can figure this out. I was riding a wave of optimism trying to finish our downstairs space and needed something textured, neutral, and a very specific size when I remembered that an easy DIY rope wall hanging has been on my to-try list forever. This seemed like the perfect time to try!
Straight off the bat, I’m going to say these instructions might not make the most sense. This rope piece started as a failed DIY bath mat but I didn’t want to get rid of the rope and really wanted to find a way to work with the knotted texture! Then I was shooting our living room shelf and needed a small wall hanging. This all came together in 5 minutes as I was rushing to shoot, which hopefully shows how easy this is to wing it!
You’ll Need
rope
sewing machine
light-colored thread
wood dowel
leather cord
thin cotton cord (twine/embroidery thread)
hot glue
Lay out your rope design to get a sense of size, making sure to add extra length to fold over the dowel later. Cut your rope where you want to add knots and tie the ends back together so you have one continuous piece.
Using a zigzag stitch, start sewing the rows of rope together, leaving loops at the end. I just looped the rope as I sewed so I was only dealing with one piece of rope the whole time. Every time you come to a knot, just pick up the sewing foot to skip over. Once you have your desired length and width, add a stitch across the top of the whole piece, trim, and set aside.
Cut your wood dowel to size. Fold rope piece over the dowel and secure with hot glue. (You could try hand sewing the rope loop, but hot glue works great on cotton rope!)
Take your leather cord and tie a loop on either side of the rope piece on the dowel to create a hanging loop. If you’re using a thick leather cord like this one, you might have to use thinner cotton cording to lash the leather ends together on the back.
