Amongst the many reasons terracotta is my favorite color, it’s an all-season neutral that makes it the perfect hue and material to transition summer trends into fall. Pair it with bright whites and soft pinks? Summer. Pair it with deeper mustards and tweed browns? Fall. Make tiny mantle reindeer? Yes, because terracotta clay is vers.a.tile. But enough about my obsession, let’s get into making these DIY terracotta rainbow earrings!
You’ll Need
terracotta clay*
white paint pen
super glue
earring posts + backs
*This terracotta clay is my absolute favorite. It bakes into such a rich color and is amazing to work with.
- Roll out your clay to an even thickness. Cut out two arches. You can make a template if you want the earrings to match perfectly, but I love the handmade look terracotta naturally lends itself to, so I just freehanded these.
- Round out the edges of the arches with your fingers. Terracotta clay is softer than normal polymer and can easily be smoothed. Just be careful about fingerprints! Also, unlike normal polymer clay, you can NOT sand it after baking. You can check out the terracotta reindeer post to see what happens, but essentially it acts like if you were sanding a terracotta pot and you get a white, scratched up surface.
- Bake according to instructions.
- Wait for the arches to completely cool. Then use a paint pen and draw your rainbow arches. I initially tried painting the arches with acrylic paint and a brush but found I had better consistency and opacity with a paint pen. I also found it is easier to work from out to in and let the layers dry in between to prevent smudging.
- Attach your earrings posts to the back with super glue and let dry. Pair with any kind of desert hue palette for peak aesthetic 👍.
We’re gearing up for fall and holiday posts! Are there any DIYs you look forward to each year? Are there any kinds you’d like to see more of here?
