Welcome to the second set in our Inspiring Women Halloween costumes series! To recap, I started thinking of easy costume ideas you could pull together from closet pieces, which got me thinking about iconic outfits and the women behind them.
Last week’s costume was Claire Saffitz. This week (if you couldn’t guess from the title) is the organizational maven herself, Marie Kondo! To call her a “decluttering expert” doesn’t quite encompass the impact she’s had on millions of lives. She was able to tap into the very real emotional aspects of cleaning house and gently guide people through their own unburdening journeys. While she has never pointedly said to use the same mindset for other aspects, her concept of leaving behind clutter and only holding on to things that truly bring you joy has been such a personal reset and mantra for the year.
Now since this a new series, a few disclaimers. There is the 100% accurate outfit and then there is the “use what you got in your closet/costume budget” option. I research like hell to find the exact pieces 1) because it’s a fun sleuthing game and 2) it gives me a better idea of what the core elements are.
For this series though, I’m going to stick to linking just the items I’m actually wearing or similar items to those core elements to keep these posts from getting confusingly long (unless you guys want to see the accurate pieces as well?). Anything you might have in your closet already imma leave out too since I’m going to assume no one wants to know where to get basic jeans. Almost everything can easily be sourced last minute too!
This particular outfit is based on her promo shots for her Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”. Let’s break it down!
white cardigan | yellow mid-skirt | black tights
bangs | black kitten heels | stacking storage boxes
I did have to paint the boxes gray for an exact match, but I’m pretty happy to have a matching set to actually tidy up my studio haha.
Marie tends to wear light-colored sweaters with full to quarter length sleeves, midi skirts, tights, and black heels with her hair almost always in a flipped in midi bob (I could only get my hair so straight, but the clip-in bangs were fun to play with!). She keeps her makeup light and fresh with subtle pinks that really offsets that serene, inner peace glow.
There are 2 more costumes coming your way from this series! Make sure to check out last week’s Claire Saffitz Costume here.
