The first room on the Hailey Home makeover tour is the downstairs powder room! It’s an interesting layout, with a sloped ceiling from being under the stairwell. This one room was the deciding factor to replace all the countertops in all the bathrooms instead of the entire vanities, but I’ll get into that more in the actual reveal. We’ve been waiting on our countertop installers to get the biggest piece out of the way, and in the meantime, I’ve been (spending way too much time) sourcing all the decorative pieces.
Because this is our first home and there’s a cap to how much we can put it back on the market (tl;dr we bought a townhouse in a college town), I have to keep reminding myself not to get carried away. Every little addition to the house starts to multiply by room so I needed to set some parameters.
1) As fun as custom is, unless I can DIY it, we ain’t paying for it.
2) Put money to quality staples, i.e. faucets, that will be used every day by us and potentially renters down the road so we don’t have to worry about replacing them.
3) Treat each makeover like a renter. When this place goes back on the market, we want to appeal to a wider audience without having to do anything crazy like rip off (expensive!) wallpaper.
4) Keep it simple, stupid. Especially for the powder bath, I wanted to do something more fun. I got so caught up in building a gallery wall and looking at larger than life wallpaper that my sanity and budget were quickly running out.
Thank God for Photoshop and mood boards though. After creating 19 (!) different boards & layouts, we finally landed on a style that has subtle amounts of drama and we think will tie nicely into the rest of the home. The only thing missing are the actual countertops and prints now, so I’m hoping all the colors work together as well IRL as they do in the mood board! Guess we’ll see in the final reveal 😉

P.S. If anyone is interested in the money part of home makeover, let me know! I’m still figuring out how the makeover posts will be structured, but since budget was a huge factor in some design choices, I know I would have loved to read those kinds of posts before starting.
