It feels so good to get a DIY post up again. Part of my New Year’s resolution was being more aware of how I’m spending my energy and that’s meant a few changes around here. I’ve been switching up which weeks I focus on home renos versus DIYs for the blog, and the past two weeks ended up being an extended project. While I love seeing the house come together, those bigger projects take so long to see the pay off, so this little DIY textile piece was so satisfying to make.
You’ll Need
scrap fabric
soft brush
paint
paintbrush
1. Cut your scrap fabric slightly larger than your frame or your desired end dimensions. This makes it easier to adjust the trim if you unravel it slightly too much.
2. Starting from a corner, unravel the fabric row by row. Alternate around the entire piece to keep the borders even. Trim down the fringe to size.
Optional: I knew this was going in a frame, so I didn’t spend time securing the corners to prevent additional unraveling. If you want to secure the corners, you can sew a tiny knot or use a dab of fabric glue in each corner.
3. Use a soft bristle brush to gently brush out the fringe for a softer, more organic feel.
4. Paint your shape! I found it easiest to roughly “draw” my shape with paint, paint the majority of the inside, then carefully edge in the outlines. This method will help the paint from building up too much near the outlines and you can smooth out any layering.
5. Let dry and frame!
The original plan for this little Matisse inspired piece was for it to go in the bathroom, but it looks so good in every room! I’ve been wanting to try a DIY painted tapestry for a while now, and I think this one is giving me the confidence to tackle something bigger.
What are some quick DIY “wins” you’ve been loving lately?
