Good morning, fabulous people! I’m giddy with excitement for today’s project because it’s something new here and I hope you’ll join in. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen teasers for this “Make It Challenge”. Cristina from Spatial Dwelling & I were inspired by NBC’s ‘Making It’ show and put out a call for 8 DIY bloggers to create something simple and modern using the same material. The first challenge is… raw wood. We’re making modern plant hooks over here, but be sure to check out what my fellow bloggers made with their raw wood items at the end and hashtag your own projects with #makeitchallenge so we can see what you create!
Full disclosure- I initially made these as curtain tiebacks. I really loved these leather & metal ones from Anthropologie but wanted a wooden version to match DIY curtain rods (project incoming as soon as I figure out a double version). And while these still work as curtain tiebacks, they got lost in the photographs so plant hooks they became.
Which turned out even better because I’ve been storing this hanging terrarium since our Japan honeymoon with no idea where to put it. Win 🙌
You’ll Need
3/4″ Tee fitting*
3/4″ dowel
spray paint
clear sealer
dowel screw
1| Cut two dowel pieces the same length for each side of the Tee’s bar and one piece for the back. Stain or seal and let dry completely.
2 | Spray paint and seal your Tee fitting and let dry completely. Make sure to seal the inside too! You can mark up the dowels when you’re inserting them into the pipe if the paint isn’t sealed.
3 | Pop the dowels into the Tee fitting. It was a tight enough fit that I didn’t have to use glue, but you can use a non-expanding wood-to-metal glue.
4 | Drill a hole slightly smaller than your dowel screw in the backside of the wall dowel. Screw in the dowel screw. Your hook is ready to be used!
*I used a copper tee fitting because it was smoother than the PVC options.
I’m just a little obsessed with these hooks now. Studio McGee has been a huge source of inspiration as we renovate our home and these hooks were such a fun way to introduce her signature matte black hardware and pale wood look to our own space. I’m already making more for our bathrooms and some for our entryway!
