Happy Holi-DIYS everyone! Thanksgiving is this week and then it’s 4 straight weeks of Christmas DIYs & gift guides. Since we always go to our parents’ houses for Thanksgiving, I’ve already started Christmas decorating. I’ve never been a huge fan of the classic red & green combo- it always looks out of place in our home of blue, tans, & neutrals- so I look for ways to add holiday texture instead. One of my go-to favorites is, of course, velvet.
Is there anything more luxurious than velvet ribbon? I just want to drape the whole house in yards of it. I went with neutral tones for these DIY Velvet Ribbon Mules to get a little extra wear out of them for Thanksgiving, but imagine how stunning this would be with a deep berry ribbon and pale blush shoes. Let me know if you make your own pair, or tag it with #curations! What other holiday DIYs do you want to see?
You’ll Need
shoes that need a makeover (I used these mules from Target but also love these!)
velvet ribbon
fabric glue
Exacto knife
Knot your ribbon with the velvet side facing up to create a bunched knot. Leave enough ribbon on each side to wrap around the shoe a bit. Create both knots at the same time so you can make sure they match.
Apply just a bit of glue right under the knot and where the leather meets the sole on each side. Be careful not to go overboard as the fabric glue can leak through the velvet.
Flip the ribbon up and run a thin, blunt edge (like the back of a knife) along the sole seam to get a sharp ribbon edge. Wipe away any excess fabric glue from the sole with a damp cloth.
Use an Exacto blade to trim the ribbon along the sole seam after the glue is fully dried.
I freaking love how the leather & velvet combo turned out. These already go with last year’s Terracotta Reindeer but now they have me searching for ways I can translate the look all over the house.
