You’ve combed every gift guide, made your lists and checked them twice, and now are ready to wrap! I’m a big fan of reusable gift boxes or bags: 1- they make gift wrapping so much quicker, 2- they help cut down paper waste just a bit around the holidays. I’m definitely no zero-waste expert, but one of my New Year’s goals is to look for small swaps to scale back our trash. One way we’re doing that this Holiday season is with DIY reusable, chalkboard gift tags instead of sticker tags to keep those cute boxes ready to use again!
Of course, there are pre-made chalkboard tags, but I found them to be more rustic than modern and you can make significantly more for the same cost if you DIY. (Check the wood section at Michael’s & Joann for the bulk pack and don’t forget your 40% off coupon 😉 ) I love mixing different, Holiday shapes into my wrapping kit and picking coordinating ribbon!
Rustoleum chalkboard spray paint is my absolute, ride-or-die favorite chalkboard paint. It’s the deepest, smoothest, matte black that I love to use even for non-chalkboard projects. I do 3 coats and follow the instructions and haven’t had any issues erasing or writing on it.
You could also try chalkboard contact paper to decorate just on side of a gift tag for a real no-mess DIY.
You’ll Need
chalkboard paint
wood tags or shapes
sandpaper
ribbon
1 | Sand the front, back, and sides of the gift tag.
2 | Layer up several coats of chalkboard paint, following the paint instructions to get the best results.
3 | Thread your favorite ribbon through the tag and add to a special gift.
That wraps up this year’s Christmas DIYs. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and we’ll see you in the New Year!
