DIY Rattan Remote Box to Keep the Necessities Nearby

DIY Rattan Remote Box

I fully subscribe to the notion of “there’s no such things as too much storage“. One of my past times is designing out wall-to-wall cabinet storage with IKEA’s kitchen planner in hopes that one day that will financially make sense. One of the areas that increasingly becomes a catch-all for life is, of course, our living room. This little DIY rattan remote box helps cut down on some of the visual clutter.

DIY Rattan Remote Box

I saw this box a while ago on H&M but it was too small. It kicked off the hunt for the perfect remote box – not too big but can fit all our remotes, not too high so it looks like a shoebox in the middle of the room –  until, duh, I can DIY it! I used this wood box from Joann (heck yes 40% off coupon), but this would also be a great upcycling project!

You’ll Need
sandpaper
wood box
cane webbing
flat, balsa wood trim
utility blade
45° straight edge (optional)
black paint
spray adhesive
hot glue
adhesive felt feet (optional)

  1. Like all wood projects, this starts with sanding. If your box comes with hardware you don’t want, remove the pieces and fill in the holes before sanding.
  2. Trim your cane webbing slightly smaller than the top of the box on all sides. This will help the trim pieces cover it completely.
  3. Cut your balsa wood trim to match the length x width. I like cutting the corners at a 45° for a cleaner finish, but that’s completely optional!
  4. Paint your box and trim pieces. If I could do this over again, I would seal the paint with a glossy finish just to make it easier to dust and closer to the inspiration box. Honestly, I still might.
  5. Once your box is completely dry, apply the spray adhesive to the back of the cane webbing and apply. Start at one end and gently roll & smooth down. Let dry with a few books on top.
  6. Time for the trim! Add hot glue to the middle of a trim piece. Press the trim piece into place focusing on the outside edge. If you glue the trim piece just flat on top of the cane webbing, you’ll be able to see it from the sides. If any webbing or glue does peek out, you can always paint it black to blend in!
  7. Stick on felt feet to protect your coffee or side table.

Look twice; it’s no split image, it’s my one of my Look twice; it’s no split image, it’s my one of my favorite parts from the #haileyhome condo. There Michael had his desk shoved in the corner of our small bedroom. As much as I wanted a light and airy feel, the desk always felt unintentionally “floaty”. With just paint and shelves, his desk went from an afterthought to a defined workspace with it’s own voice that felt distinct yet still a part of the room.

In our current house, I’m looking back at this project since next on my list will be Michael’s office! Michael inspired me with his 5 year anniversary gift to me (a nice furniture piece- he definitely knows me ☺️) so my gift to him will be wood shelves for his new office, plus a little space makeover.

Excited to take on a small project while the kitchen reno is underway. It’ll feel nice to feel project progress somewhere and get hands on for the first time since Cade arrived ☺️

It’s worth the space it takes up though. Capturing his growth and personality feels like the greatest privilege. I can’t believe there were only 3 weeks between his newborn and 1 month photos 🥲

I’ll take any and all inducing tips 😅

I’ve been auditioning different rooms around the new house for my studio space. Some have great storage, some have better natural light, but NONE have over headlight lighting. I didn’t think much of it until I tried crafting after work and realized, dang, I really can’t see anything 😅. I tried to make it work with different table lamps, photography lighting, even grow lights (spoiler: do not attempt unless you like being blinded). It wasn’t great. I figured I’d eventually get a proper crafting light, but wasn’t thrilled with the limited, and frankly ugly, options.

I bet you picked up on this from the photo, but I finally found THE solution. @cricut just released their Cricut Bright 360 task lamps and it’s everything I could have ever dreamed of! I’ve been putting this lamp through its paces for a few weeks with nesting DIYs and will have a full review on the blog soon!
