No Mold Needed DIY Palmistry Sculpture

$10 DIY Palmistry Sculpture

I always wanted a vintage glove mold. Something about the white porcelain and markings seemed perfectly classic but unexpected. The only problem was that they start at $40 and easily go higher. So like a good DIYer, I looked for another way. Making a hand mold or starting with an existing hand sculpture would be just as expensive as outright buying though. The solution?

$10 DIY Palmistry Sculpture

A humble rubber glove. This quick grab from the dollar store saved me the hassle and cost of making my own mold (have you seen the cost of hand casting kits??). The biggest expense for this project is the plaster of Paris. You won’t need more than a pound and you can of course pick it up from your favorite craft store with a 40% off coupon. Besides that, if you already have spray sealant and paint, this project comes under $10!

You’ll Need
plaster of Paris
heavy duty rubber glove
sandpaper
black paint + brush or brush pen
spray sealant

  1. Securely suspend your glove over a table edge. I recreated my setup in the above photo to show how non-professional it needs to be. I nailed and taped down half the glove to a clamped piece of wood and taped the other half to the back of my desk chair. And it worked beautifully.
  2. Mix your plaster according to directions. Pour into the glove making sure to get into all the fingers. Gently shake or tap the glove to get bubbles out.
  3. Let set for at least an hour or according to plaster instructions.
  4. Peel/cut away the glove while supporting the plaster (especially the fingers!).
  5. Let completely dry for at least 8 hours. Letting it dry will keep the paint or pen from bleeding.
  6. Sand off any glove texture.
  7. Paint or draw your design. I used my DIY palmistry tapestry from last year as inspiration, but you can also use your own hand lines! Work top to bottom to prevent smudging. If you make a mistake, no worries! You can always sand it away before sealing.
  8. Let your design settle into the plaster for ~1 hour. Use a spray sealant to finish. A brush-on finish will smear the design.
Important Note: You can not sand the spray finish. It will peel and take off the design (any guesses as to how I learned that lesson?).

$10 DIY Palmistry Sculpture

This is honestly one of my favorite DIYs! I love the Halloween twist the palmistry markings bring. It adds that subtle holiday flair to our “tarot themed” mantel and I’m half convinced to leave it out all year.

This is SO cute! I love that it doesn’t require you to make a mold, because that just adds way too much complexity to a DIY. Such a great decor piece!

Agreed! When I looked at molds the cost quickly became more than just buying something similar outright. Thanks for visiting and I’m excited to follow up on Bloglovin!

Love it! I have tried something similar and it was soooo inferior to what you created. This is exactly what i was going for and didn’t accomplish. Is there a trick to get the base flat so it stands without support?

I just made sure the two levels I taped the glove to were at the same height and let gravity do its thing! I spent a little time shaking the gloves to get everything settled, but that was it

What I’m hearing from this is you’ve got a knack for it, also known as talent! Thanks for the reply. I love your results and I’m inspired to try again.

Look twice; it’s no split image, it’s my one of my Look twice; it’s no split image, it’s my one of my favorite parts from the #haileyhome condo. There Michael had his desk shoved in the corner of our small bedroom. As much as I wanted a light and airy feel, the desk always felt unintentionally “floaty”. With just paint and shelves, his desk went from an afterthought to a defined workspace with it’s own voice that felt distinct yet still a part of the room.

In our current house, I’m looking back at this project since next on my list will be Michael’s office! Michael inspired me with his 5 year anniversary gift to me (a nice furniture piece- he definitely knows me ☺️) so my gift to him will be wood shelves for his new office, plus a little space makeover.

Excited to take on a small project while the kitchen reno is underway. It’ll feel nice to feel project progress somewhere and get hands on for the first time since Cade arrived ☺️

It’s worth the space it takes up though. Capturing his growth and personality feels like the greatest privilege. I can’t believe there were only 3 weeks between his newborn and 1 month photos 🥲

I’ve been auditioning different rooms around the new house for my studio space. Some have great storage, some have better natural light, but NONE have over headlight lighting. I didn’t think much of it until I tried crafting after work and realized, dang, I really can’t see anything 😅. I tried to make it work with different table lamps, photography lighting, even grow lights (spoiler: do not attempt unless you like being blinded). It wasn’t great. I figured I’d eventually get a proper crafting light, but wasn’t thrilled with the limited, and frankly ugly, options.

I bet you picked up on this from the photo, but I finally found THE solution. @cricut just released their Cricut Bright 360 task lamps and it’s everything I could have ever dreamed of! I’ve been putting this lamp through its paces for a few weeks with nesting DIYs and will have a full review on the blog soon!
