Have you guys seen Mandy Moore’s home tour?? The Sarah Sherman Samuel team single handily gave terrazzo a whole new modern platform when they revealed the hand-poured work they used all over the house. And if this blog’s most popular post is any indication, you guys are still very on board with the trend! Which is great because that means I get to keep making terrazzo DIYs ;).
When I shared the gold fronds DIY, I mentioned that we don’t really decorate for fall. We usually just rely on tiny pumpkins scattered throughout the house to get as close to fall as we can in Florida. Well, those same tiny pumpkins are getting a makeover today- and not just in terrazzo. Marlene from Idle Hands Awake, Faith from Design Fixation, and Cristina from Spatial Dwellings are all sharing their takes on modern trends as DIY pumpkins, so make sure to check out their projects at the end!
You’ll Need
pumpkins!
3-4 acrylic paints
liquid gold leaf (this one if my favorite, but pick it up locally at Michael’s or Joann’s for 40% off ;))
angled paint brushes
finishing spray if you’re using fake pumpkins for year-after-year decor
To get the most “accurate” terrazzo look, I find sticking to 3-5 colors in an analogous or complementary palette works best. To make it just a bit more fall (and because of my refound love of gold) I used gold, liquid leaf as a highlight color. Looking back, I wish I used more!
Whether you choose more angular or organic shapes, crisp lines will help keep it within the terrazzo style instead of creeping into brushstroke or confetti territory (both of which make cute pumpkins too!).
Work in layers, starting with one color and mapping out the biggest shapes. Let dry. Repeat with the rest of the color and shapes, making sure to occasionally overlap them.
If you’re doing this on faux pumpkins, let all the layers dry before sealing with a top coat so the colors don’t run together.
