I met Chelsea this year at Alt Summit and I’m so happy fate put us at the same lunch table. She is a brilliant creative who specializes in miniatures (seriously, check out her work and tell me those mini tiles don’t make you want to take on a real renovation or buy her DIY miniature kit!!) and was hosting a stop motion course. Her talent stretches across all mediums as she transforms simple materials into magical moments, and today she’s sharing how to create these DIY Leather House Pins so you can add a little extra flair to your wardrobe. Take it away, Chelsea!
If you’re looking for a quick and inexpensive way to customize your jacket or bag, look no further! These scrap leather community pins add a little cuteness to anything and they take only minutes to make.
You’ll Need
scrap leather (whatever you have on hand or whatever you can get at a local store. I used this veg tanned option)
pin backs
gem glue
black, leather paint
small paintbrush or toothpick
scissors
ruler
Start by cutting your leather scraps into rectangles approximately 1” x 2.5” in size. They don’t need to be perfect, in fact – it’s cuter if they aren’t!
Cut one side of the 1” scrap into varying roof shapes. Start simple with a triangular roof, leave some rectangular, and play with angles!
Once your pieces are all cut, use your paintbrush or toothpick to paint a thin border around the edge of the smooth side of the leather. Paint a border on all of the houses following the shape of the roofline.
Add details including shingles, siding, doors, and windows.
Let dry.
Flip the houses over and use a small amount of gem glue to attach your pin back to the rough side of the leather.
Once dry, add to your favorite jacket or tote and admire your cute little neighborhood.
