Andddd, back with the holiday projects! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving 🙂 We spent the long weekend drawing up plans for our bedroom instead of decorating, so we have a lot to catch up on. Thankfully all the projects I have in store for the rest of the year will help us get there! One small way we’ve started is by changing over all the scents in the house, including our body oil. Nothing like the smell of pine trees to put you in the Christmas mood!
I am obsessed with almond oil. It keeps your skin nice and hydrated without feeling oily like coconut oil or suffocating like lotion. (I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t stand the feeling of lotion). Combined with this holiday essential oil blend? Magic.
Important Note 1: All linked oils are organic because this is meant to be absorbed by your skin. In past projects, like a room diffuser or yoga mat deodorizer, organic isn’t absolutely necessary but I’d highly recommend organic for anything made for your body.
Important Note 2: Essential oils are highly concentrated so you should always be careful to not handle with your bare hands. If you do get some on you, DO NOT wash with water. Grab a neutral, carrier oil and keep “washing” with it until the sensation goes away. A carrier oil is a neutral oil that makes essential oils more stable so you can use them for your body, hair, or room diffuser.
You’ll Need
organic sweet almond oil
clove essential oil
balsam fir or spruce essential oil
cedarwood essential oil
vetiver essential oil
funnel
dark amber bottle (always use a dark glass bottle with essential oils to prevent it from breaking down)
This DIY has one, maybe two steps if we stretch it out. Just transfer your almond oil to your amber bottle, add your essential oils, and mix!
The great thing about essential oils is that you can work with ratios to scale up or down without losing the scent profile. For this holiday inspired scent, I went with a 3:3:2:2 mix of clove, balsam fir, cedarwood, and vetiver. To wrap some exact numbers around that, for a 32 oz. bottle I used 30 drops of clove, 30 drops balsam fir, 20 drops cedarwood, 20 drops vetiver.
If you like your woodsy smells balanced by something sweet, try adding Ylang-ylang, sweet orange, or lavender. If you want to take it more masculine, add black pepper or bergamot. You can play around with different ratios in small amounts to get your mix just right!
Why use sweet almond oil as a base?
There are tons of carrier oils to choose from, but I always recommend sweet almond oil. It’s one of the more affordable carrier oils and has little to no scent so you can actually smell your essential oils.Â
It also is packed with vitamins A and E which work together to keep your skin soft and protected. Its light scent and quick absorption make it the perfect base for an essential oil scented body oil. 👌
