The holiday feeling starts at home and home starts with, well, your front door! This cheery DIY gingerbread house doormat is such a fun way to set the tone for the rest of your house and get your holiday decorating off on the right foot 😉
I originally saw an adorable (out of stock) gingerbread doormat from Anthropologie for $38 and thought, wait a minute, this reminds me a lot of The Merrythought’s DIY House Doormat. And theirs was <$15 to make! So I did what we do best and DIYed it of course.
You’ll Need
plain, coir doormat
chalk
ruler
painter’s tape
white acrylic paint
paintbrushes*
- I found it easier to sketch directly on the mat with chalk, but you can definitely sketch out a few ideas before painting! Either way, you’ll want to get a good sense of where you want your roofline, doors, and windows. I used basic school chalk that was admittedly a little difficult to see, but I liked that I could easily “erase” my sketch.
- Start with big features and then fill in small details. Tape out your main, defining lines first so that it’s easier to place the finishes. I started with my roofline, making sure to center the top point.
- With a generous amount of paint, paint in towards the tape for a clean line. Let the main lines dry completely before adding secondary detail in case you need to tape off other areas.
*Do not use your nice paintbrushes! The coir can do some serious damage to delicate bristles. I used my favorite, rounded craft brushes from IKEA for curves and details and a cheapy flat head brush for cutting into my lines.
I’ve been trying to sprinkle Christmas decorations throughout the whole house so it’s not just the living room getting all the attention. I love how much spirit it brings to our front porch!
