These DIY evergreen holiday hair combs definitely feel like the culmination of last year’s holiday hat, foraged evergreen bouquet, and my recent obsession with statement hair combs. But instead of foraged finds, all the greenery you need can be found in a $5 arrangement from Trader Joes! I so wish I had a picture of the bouquet before I deconstructed it, but it pulled all the best of the season into one fragrant centerpiece.
Seriously. How perfect are the pieces? Three different greenery textures, shapes, and sizes that just lend themselves to effortless layering.
You’ll Need
assorted evergreens
hair combs
hot glue
floral wire/tape (optional)
I also used these tiny bells and velvet ribbon I used in an upcoming Apartment Therapy gift post and a miscellaneous pinecone from somewhere in the craft stash, but all in all, each comb was easy to pull together and probably the most relaxing part of my holiday yet.
Start by arranging the evergreen pieces on top of a comb to judge placement and trimming size. I find it helpful to think of each set in 3 layers, starting from the ‘background’ with the biggest/fullest piece, to the ‘middleground’ with a contrasting texture, and finishing with the ‘foreground’ details.
Using hot glue or floral tape, bind each comb group together than hot glue or use floral wire to attach to the comb. The floral wire really didn’t do well with the individual thin branches, so bunching them together first will help they stay on the comb. For all three I just used a hot glue gun and it worked remarkably well. Even those tiny holly berries were glued on!
The best part of using evergreens is the longevity of these combs! I had mine out for about a week then moved them to the fridge to keep them fresh for Christmas and they still look like I just made them. Hello, favorite statement piece for all the holiday parties!
