We’re getting ready to move soon and I’m dying to decorate the new place! I’m trying to explore different colors this time around and keep getting drawn to soft palettes in rough textures like Anthropologie’s Colorado vases. The simple shapes stand out in unusual colors, but sometimes those colors just don’t go with what you’ve got (nor the price point with my wallet¯\_(ツ)_/¯). Thankfully it’s incredibly easy to DIY!
Originally I was going to do this on some smaller, IKEA vases but then found these gems in the new Opalhouse collection (plus one clearance vase from last season’s collection ;)). These are perfect because they’re unglazed! This means they’ll retain their rough, satin texture under the spraypaint and mimic the original Colorado vases’ texture.
Each vase is ~$10 but this is the perfect way to upcycle old vases too! Match them to a flower garden party or bridal shower for spring. The range of heights makes DIY arrangments a breeze.
You’ll Need
vases (large terracotta, medium terracotta, small terracotta, blue glazed)
matte spraypaint (without primer for the terracotta)
sandpaper (for glazed vases)
You’ll want spraypaint without primer for the terracotta vases to keep the texture. I didn’t realize this until it came to the coral color. That vase ended up a lot smoother than the others.
This is really a one-step DIY if you get terracotta vases. Spray paint two coats and you’re done! Terracotta loves spraypaint and will hold on forever.
If you’re trying this on a glazed vase, roughly sand the surface. Apply one layer of light, stone texture spray paint (I like Krylon’s stone texture in limestone). I skipped this step here, but have tried this technique before and it works beautifully! Let dry completely then apply your color coats.
The coral is a first for me, but the best part is if I get tired of it, I can just paint it again! We’ll see if my growing spraypaint collection can keep up 😉
