Have you heard of the term “social distancing”? Social distancing is the practice of avoiding large public groups and cutting down our social interactions to flatten the curve (aka do our small part to help cut down the spread of COVID-19). With conferences & events getting canceled and the rise of working from home, it can be easy to go stir crazy. This post almost felt frivolous in the face of everything, but that’s exactly why I think we should look for ways to turn our energy towards something positive and creative. Here are some beginner-friendly DIYs that don’t require a lot of supplies so you can start practicing meditative crafting while homebound.
Practice a little self-care and indulge with DIY bath bombs. If you’re into essential oils, you might already have everything you need minus citric acid. I recently used this recipe to make a ton of mini bombs for a conference and they were a hit!
Raid your spice cabinet and experiment with tea blends! This Cuppa Calm recipe was given to me by a friend and nothing puts me in a deeper, more restful sleep.
Dig around your toolbox, gardening supplies, or craft closet, and you’ll probably find wire. Turn it into a fun statement piece to wear or add to your gallery wall!
Create beautiful snail mail to reach out to your friends who are also distancing. This printable has shapes you can turn into reveal flaps for an extra layer of fun.
Enforced shopping hiatus? Look to your closet and see what basics you can makeover with a bit of paint or embroidery.
No basics to paint? Turn to that stash of nail polish and get creative with nail art.
Elevate your work from home station with a DIY leather and cork mousepad. Other DIY ideas for your office space: whiteboard organizer, fabric covered pen cup, and hanging idea roll.
If you’re like me, you have a stash of random frames that you thought would be great around the house but haven’t quite found the art or spot for them yet. Good thing they’re the perfect base for DIYs! Turn them into a jewelry organizer, or whiteboard, or actually spend the homebound time creating that gallery wall you’ve always wanted.
Not everyone has dye at home, but you probably have bleach. You can use the same folding techniques to create unique textiles (and disinfect at the same time 😉 ).
This might be a stretch, but if you have a wood scrap pile, you can turn those little cut-offs into shelving vignettes. I made this shelf as a sunglasses holder but now use it to wrangle bits and bobs our the bedroom.
Just like your closet staples, your home basics could be perfect for a little painting update. I love how Kristin used leftover paint samples to make her basic, white vase standout.
All you need is cardstock, paint/markers, string, and scissors to create a beautiful mobile. This would be perfect to bring color to a corner where you couldn’t put a plant.
Air-dry clay or polymer, you can create earrings, paperweights, palo santo strikers, and so much more! I love just starting with a hunk of clay and playing with it with no expectations and seeing what happens.
Thinking of everyone homebound and hoping we all find ways to practice self-care and mindfulness. xx
