Dark & Spicy Hot Chocolate

December 4, 2015

Spicy Hot Chocolate Recipe. Add a kick to your standard dark chocolate drink with cayenne pepper.

We’ve already had our first snow in Chicago! How crazy is that? My closet is lacking serious sweater game for snow. To keep warm inside, I’ll be turning to this decadent recipe. Dark chocolate with a little bit of spice can make anyone a bit braver this winter.

Spicy Hot Chocolate Recipe. Add a kick to your standard dark chocolate drink with cayenne pepper.

Dark & Spicy Hot Chocolate | serves 2
1 5 oz. dark chocolate bar, 70%+
2 pinches cayenne pepper
pinch of salt
3 cups milk of choice (note: the higher the fat content of the milk, the richer the end taste. And really, you’re melting a bar of chocolate here- go all the way)
toppings of choice

In a small saucepan or pot, gently warm your milk at a low heat. Bringing milk quickly to a high temp will cook it.

While the milk is heating up, use a knife to chop your chocolate bar into small chunks. Too big and the chocolate won’t melt, too fine (like grating on a cheese grater fine), and the chocolate will float to the surface without distributing.

Whisk in the chopped chocolate, stirring throughout to ensure a smooth consistency. Once the chocolate is mixed in, add your cayenne powder and salt. Serve with your favorite topping.

Apple cider is my favorite fall drink- there isn’t anything cozier. Trying to find a recipe online that didn’t require mashing my own apples, or buying 5 different spices at once was near impossible however.

Luckily, my local farmer’s market has plenty of apple farmers who do the mashing for you. With fresh apple cider, and the parred down essential spices, this recipe will be follow you through the season.  Bonus? Your whole house will smell amazing.

Spiced Apple Cider | serves 6
1 navel orange
1 T whole all spice berries
3 cinnamon sticks
1/2 gal fresh pressed apple cider

Using a vegetable peeler, strip your oranges into small peels. Then, load up your favorite tea strainer with the all spice berries.

Transfer your orange peels, tea strainer, cinnamon sticks & cider to a pot. Let simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.  If you want to make it spiked, remove from heat & add dark rum to taste.
